so informative and fun as well. Only just today I happened upon a copy
of "The Importance of living" in a gem of a used bookstore by my house.
Consequently I've been humored and educated by Lin the latter part of
the day. His views on the inhumanity of western dress really hit my
funny bone , none the less, educated my views towards the political
"power" western dress conveys. I can't wait to read more and learn of
this man and his forward thinking in such a time of strife. By the way
for fun, does anyone know why business men continue to to wear a noose
as a show of power, wealth and professionalism? I think it illogical
the richest men in the world see it as neccesity not realizing they
have more than earned the right to lose the tie. ~ Or, is it "the tie"
that binds them across all the miles?

and had the opportunity to revisit many old favorites. "The Importance
of Living" was one that belonged to an Uncle who was a part of the I
AM society in the "30s" so I saved it to be read at a later date. I
decided to read a chapter a day to see if it would be something that
I should send to my daughter who adopted a baby girl from China. I am
enjoying it so much I may keep it. After all she can't read and her
"fundamentalist" mother (my daughter) would have a cardiac. This all
to say I have been unable to stop with just one chapter per day. Like
most I came to your site to learn more about the author. As an English
major in college I was never exposed. "When the time is right, the teacher
will come." Thank you for the bibliography for future reading

Wang Haijun haijun27((at))263.net haijun27(at)263.net Qingdao, P.R. China - Friday, January 11, 2002 at 14:06:02 (GMT) I discovered Dr. Lin Yutang's "Importance of Living"
in an old used bookstore in Durango, Colorado. The secret to this bestseller
is his comparisons & contrasts with American life. I love his list of
3 American vices: efficiency, punctuality and goal-setting! Oh, my,
art these virtues? Today, of course, the Chinese suffer from these 3
vices! Lin would be shocked by today's Chinese efficiency! But he's
often half joking because I noticed that he prefers American plumbers
if his house has a leak! Lin is also a libertarian who distrusts authoritarianism,
big government, and Marxism (he hated the Chinese communists, who banned
his books and banned him from China!). My kind of guy. I actually played
Lin Yutang, quoting from his book of philosophy, before the Eris Society
(www.erissociety.org) a few years ago in Aspen, Colorado, and got a
standing ovation. I now head up the Foundation for Economic Education
(FEE), the oldest free-market educational foundation (1946), which publishes
"Ideas on Liberty." Lin would love this monthly journal! (www.fee.org).
I've cited Lin's work several times in my columns. And as president
of FEE, we just became the new owners of Laissez Faire Books (www.laissezfairebooksdotcom)
and are now carrying "The Importance of Living" as a singular libertarian
book of philosophy. The book is well received by most libertarians except
feminists who dislike his traditional views toward women (subservient
to the needs of men), fanatic non-smokers who dislike his denunciation
of "rational" health nuts, and dogmatic Christians who are incensed
by his defense of Paganism!

about Lin Yutang. I first read The Importance of Living in 1958 while
at high school in Scotland. After a very strong Irish Catholic upbringing
including six years in a seminary, this book opened my eyes to the fact
that there were other ways of seeing the world and more than one way
to be a good person. Ironically, I bought it at a church bazaar! It
had a great influence on my life, helping me to break out of previous
confines. I still have that battered book on another continent now,
although I have not read it again; time to give it another go now that
I'm retiring from a life of teaching. I'm also very interested in Irish
music,a part of my heritage, and can manage a few tunes on the recorder
- as long as no-one's listening! Thanks for a great site - the definition

Bjorn Hauksson bjorn_oli_hauksson bjorn_oli_hauksson Iceland - Sunday, September 30, 2001 at 22:28:59 (BST) I do not know how I came about a copy of Lin's Importance
of living. It appeared as cloud on a scorching afternoon or as a covered
bridge in a downpour. I never saw it on a bookshelf and bought it. I
only know it sits playfully defiant among my technical manuals, junk
paperbacks, music and assorted how-to. I have a sneaking suspicion that
my estranged sister put it there for future reference. Perhaps at the
time she knew something I did not. In any event, it always proves to
be a respite like a peek into another place and a mirror at the same
time. I think one day I might out grow it and stop liking it, but not
today.

I agree that Lin Yutang's fiction is generally not on par with his nonfiction.
His first novel, MOMEMT IN PEKING, however, is more substantial and
not to be missed. (My impression is that he attempted to write the HUNG
LOU MENG of his generation--and nearly succeeded!) The sequel, LEAF
IN THE STORM, pales by comparison. Some later novels, notably JUNIPER
LOA, seem somewhat contrived. His utopian novel, LOOKING BEYOND (aka
UNEXPECTED ISLAND), like most utopian novels, sacrifices plot and character
for philosophical exposition. On the other hand, I do think RED PEONY
is better than it's been given credit for. His biographical novels,
THE GAY GENIUS (SU TUNG-PO) and LADY WU are very worthwhile. In all
his novels, Lin's warmth and wisdom are much in evidence, and for for
that I have enjoyed them all.

Benjamin hibenjamin((at))chinadotcom hibenjamin(at)chinadotcom - Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at 05:48:02 (BST) Love the site. I read Importance of Living while
in my teens and continue coming back to it, often with a good pipe between
my teeth. Reading the relaxed, spontaneous prose makes me feel as if
I'm conversing with an old friend. I feel very much philosophically
aligned with Dr. Lin. The book that originally turned me on to Importance
of Living was Raymond Smullyan's excellent The Tao is Silent. I think
professor Smullyan is the Western equivalent of Dr. Lin, and recommend
him heartily to anyone who enjoyed Importance of Living. I've read most
of Dr. Lin's philosophically inclined non-fiction, but have a problem
with his fiction, which I cannot quite get into. It feels to "airy"
and slight to my taste. Granted, I've only tried reading Red Peony--got
about 50 pages into it and put it down. Is it just me? Should I try
another Lin novel? And where in the world can one find Reflections of
an Octogenarian???? I'm also curious as to why he went back to Christianity
after being such a happy Taoist? Ah, questions, questions....

supporters for Dr. Lin's work. In my humble opinion, his greatest contribution
is to introduce Chinese culture to the English speaking world in a way
no person has ever done before. Being English is his adopted language,
Dr. Lin has written English with such an artistry that is once my envy,
admiration, and despair. I recently also read a biography written by
his second daughter, Lin Tayi. The book goes into extreme detail of
his personal life also his favorite Chinese poems. Do you know that
Dr. Lin only came to "love" his wife after they got married? There was
actually another lady who always had a special place in his heart. Her
name is Lee GinRae. But like the heroine in "Moment In Peking." his
love he for his wife was more based on commitment, partnership, and
royalty, whereas his love for that special lady ( Ms. Lee) was mroe
based on lust and infatuation. I respect any love, regardless what types
of it. I respect even more for his uncondiontal love for his family
that is based commitment and royalty. I found the biography very heartwarming
and inspiring and I recommend this book to any Chinese speaking people
( I am not sure if is has an English version). Thank you.

one book at the ripe old age of 42. How foolish of me!

Carmel Little
Carmel Little clittle((at))csjp-olp.org clittle(at)csjp-olp.org Bellevue, USA - Friday, September 17, 1999 at 19:14:09 (BST) The most comprehensive bibliography of Lin Yutang's
English language publications that I am aware of is A. J. Anderson's
which is published in the BULLETIN OF BIBLIOGRAPHY vol. 30 no. 2 (April-June
1973), pp. 83-89. This bibliography is complete only up to 1973 (Lin's
Chinese-English Dictionary is the last item) and therefore does not
include later works, such as the 1975 MEMOIRES OF AN OCTAGENARIAN and
Anderson's 1975 anthology, LIN YUTANG: BEST OF AN OLD FRIEND, nor new
editions of earlier works. Anderson includes most hardback reprints
published up to 1973, but not all. This is not a descriptive bibliography.
(For example, if you are wondering whether the black or orange cover
of MOMENT IN PEKING is the true first printing, this will not help you.
Aside: I'm pretty sure tho' not positve it's the black.) If, however,
you are more interested in collecting all of Lin's works than in collecting
first editions (or all editions), it's useful. Up to now, most "serious
collectors" ignore all but IMPORTANCE OF LIVING and MOMENT IN PEKING,
so firsts of most of Lin's works are extrordinarily inexpensive. (But
who can put a price on wisdom?? I've got about three dozen titles so
far.) If you just can't wait to discover his books by chance, most of
his titles can be found for sale on the larger electronic used book
catalogs, such as Bibliofind and Bibliocity. Should the Nobel Prize
for Literature have gone to Lin for MOMENT IN PEKING rather than to
Pearl Buck for THE GOOD EARTH? That's a debatable question. On the whole,
Buck's subsequent reputation has fared better than Lin, although the
two are actually very different kinds of writers. I predict that critical
interest in Lin will reappear in academic circles after Buck, probably
driven by interest in the history of Sino-American literature. Why isn't
Lin more widely recognized? The quality of his novels probably do not
have the consistency of Buck's (although I'm not well read enough in
Buck to say). We may also regret that Lin sacrificed so much intellectual
energy to addressing the concerns of the mid-twentieth century which
no longer have the immediacy and relevance they once did. This is why
the broadly philosophical IMPORTANCE OF LIVING will always have more
appeal than, say, VIGIL OF A NATION. Yet his topical books display the

on my thinking and the way I order my life. One of my favorite quotes
of his is: "There is so much to love and admire in life that it is an
act of ingratitude not to be happy and content in this existence." Also:
"Anybody who will speak the truth about society is bound to shock the
world." Thanks for making information about him available to others,
particularly those who may not have heard of him before. I particularly
appreciate your having included the comprehensive bibliography. Some
other books you might find enlightning are: "If You Meet the Buddha
on the Road, Kill Him" by Dr. Sheldon Kopp "All I Really Need to Know
I Learned in Kindergarden" by Robert Fulghum "Radical Honesty" by Dr.
Brad Blanton "Das Energi" by Paul Williams" "Finite and Infinite Games"

in introducing China to the Western world. Despite his fluency in English,
he had got a relatively traditional Chinese mind. I have just been to
Shenzhen a few days ago and found that the Foreign Language Teaching
and Research Press has published My Country and My People, Moment in
Peking, The Importance of Living and Six Chapters of a Floating Life
in English, with forwards written by Ms Lin Taiyi. These books, I think,
can been easily obtained in major bookshops around China.

Laucretia Holle lholle((at))u.arizona.edu lholle(at)u.arizona.edu Tucson, , U.S.A. - Saturday, June 12, 1999 at 04:45:03 (BST) My first reading about Dr.Lin began with "Moment
in Peking", and at that time I was only a 10-year-old girl, who was
very impressionable. I loved that book, so much. Now I am grown up,
with my ever increasing interest in Literature, I have been a voracious
reader in all kinds of books. Though I have to admit to myself that
"Moment in Peking" may not be a first-class novel, especially when I
found how many similarities Mulan and Yun'er(the heroine in "Fu Shen
Liu Ji") share together, I still love that book. It feels like an old
friend, or the lover you most devote to, that even he/she has those
obvious shortcomings, one still tolerate happily. yesterday I finally
obtained the original copy of "Moment in Peking", not those translated
versions, fortunately, it added so much peace, joy, and fun to this
work-filled summer. and I am sooooooo happy.

it's a story about how a big family transform thier life style from

pronounce in that way, the major female charactor's name is Mulian.
